The Gargar dam ( French Barrage Gargar ) is located in Algeria in the Oued Rhiou commune , Relizane province . It dams the Oued Rhiou into a reservoir. The city of Mostaganem is located approx. 60 km west of the dam, the city of Ech Cheliff approx. 30 km northeast.

The dam was built between 1984 and 1988. It is used for irrigation and drinking water supply.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 90 (or 70) m and a crown length of 400 m. The crest of the dam is at a height of 130 m above sea level . The width of the dam is 480 m at the base and 10 m at the top.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 98.12 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 118 m (maximum 129.78 m during high water), the reservoir extends over an area of ​​around 21 km² and holds 450 million m³ of water. In 2004 the storage capacity was 358 million m³. The annual inflow into the reservoir is around 185 million m³.
