The Penha Garcia dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Penha Garcia ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Castelo Branco district . It dams the Pônsul , a right (northern) tributary of the Tejo to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Penha Garcia ). The eponymous municipality Penha Garcia is located about 200 m south of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1975. The construction was completed in 1979. In addition to the drinking water supply, the dam is also used for irrigation. It is owned by the CM Idanha-a-Nova .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 25 m above the foundation level (21.5 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 519 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 112 m and its width 2 m. The volume of the structure is 14,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 1.7 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 47 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 110 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 500 years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 516 m (maximum 517.65 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.204 km² and holds 1.070 million m³ of water - of which 1.001 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion target is 506 m.
