The dam Reventazón ( Spanish Represa Reventazón ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the province of Limón , Costa Rica . It dams the Reventazón to a small reservoir. The town of Siquirres is located 8 km northeast of the dam. The capital San José is about 40 km southwest of the dam.
Construction of the dam and the associated power station began in 2010. The power plant went into operation in March 2016. Official commissioning by the current President of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solís , took place on September 16, 2016. The power plant is owned by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) and is also operated by ICE.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a CFR dam with a height of 130 m. The length of the dam crest is 540 m and its width 9 m. The volume of the structure is 9 million m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 500 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 10,000 (or 11,379) m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 11,379 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 10,000 years.
The water is first led from the dam through a tunnel (length 1.672 km, diameter 9.4 m) and then through a pressure pipeline to the machine hall of the power plant. The total length of the tunnel and penstock is 4.2 km.
During the construction period, the Reventazón was diverted through 2 tunnels (length 680 m, diameter 14 m). After the dam was completed, the two tunnels were closed.
Reservoir
When the reservoir is fully blocked, it extends over an area of around 6.9 km² and holds 118 million m³ of water. The length of the lake is 8 km.
power plant
The Reventazón power plant ( Planta Hidroeléctrica Reventazón in Spanish ) has an installed capacity of 305.5 MW .
The four Francis turbines of the power plant each produce a maximum of 73 (or 74) MW and the associated generators 86.2 MVA . The rated speed of the turbines is 300 rpm. The nominal voltage of the associated generators is 13.8 kV . There is also a smaller Francis turbine with a horizontal shaft and an output of 13.5 MW. The connection to the high-voltage network is via a 1.8 km long overhead line to an existing 230 kV line.
The drop height is given as 133.4 m. The flow rate is 240 m³ / s.
Others
The total cost of the project is put at $ 1.216 (or 1.345 or 1.4) billion USD . The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) provided $ 200 million in funding. The costs were estimated by the IADB in 2012 at USD 1.1 billion.
The turbines, generators and other electromechanical equipment were supplied by VA Tech Hydro , today's Andritz AG .
