The Dam San Gabriel ( English San Gabriel Dam ) is located in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County , USA . It is the second of the 3 dams that dam the upper reaches of the San Gabriel River . About 21 km upstream is the Cogswell Dam and about 4 km downstream is the Morris Dam . The city of San Dimas is approximately 7 km south.

The dam was constructed by the Los Angeles County Flood Control District from 1932 to 1939 . It serves for flood protection and the drinking water supply. The dam is operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a dam (earth and stone rubble dam) with a height of 94.5 m (310  feet ) above the original river bed. The length of the dam crest is 457 m (1,500  feet ). The flood relief is on the right side of the river.

Reservoir

When fully blocked , the reservoir holds 65.83 million m³ (86.1 million cubic yards ) of water. The sediment deposits in the reservoir have already been removed several times by dredging.

power plant

The power station is on the left side of the dam. It has an installed capacity of 5  MW . From the outlet of the power station, an approx. 13 km (8  miles ) long tunnel ( Azusa Conduit ) leads to the city of Azusa .

Others

The construction costs of the dam stood at 17 million USD .

Severe flooding occurred in Los Angeles from February 27 to March 3, 1938. The Los Angeles River reached a maximum discharge of 11,000 m³ / s. Although the San Gabriel dam was not yet completed in 1938, it helped, together with the two other dams on the upper reaches, to significantly reduce the flood point of the San Gabriel River .
