The Senhora de Monforte dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Senhora de Monforte ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Guarda district . It dams the Côa , a left (southern) tributary of the Douro, to a reservoir. The town of Pinhel is about three kilometers southwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1990. The construction was completed in 1993. The dam is used to generate electricity.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 20 m above the foundation level (18 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 440 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 78 m and its width 1 m. The volume of the dam is 6,800 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 21 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 800 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 800 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring was determined to be once every 100 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 435 m (maximum 439.9 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.023 km² and holds 87,300 m³ of water - 35,900 m³ of this can be used. The minimum storage target is 433 m.
power plant
Two Francis turbines are installed with a maximum output of 10 MW . The average annual production is 32.9 million kWh .
