The Vermiosa dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Vermiosa ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Guarda district . It dams the Ribeira da Devesa to a reservoir. The small town of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo is about ten kilometers northwest of the dam.

The project to build the dam started in 1993. The construction was completed in 1999. The dam is used for irrigation. It is owned by the Junta de Agricultores da Vermiosa .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 18 m above the foundation level (15.5 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at an altitude of 688 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 288 m and its width 6 m. The volume of the dam is 95,000 m³.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 1.74 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 90 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 74 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 684.8 m (maximum 686.3 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.489 km² and holds 2.25 million m³ of water - of which 2.2 million m³ can be used. The minimum storage target is 674.2 m.
