The Vigia dam ( Portuguese Barragem da Vigia ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Évora district . It dams the Ribeira do Vale de Vasco , a right (western) tributary of the Guadiana to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem da Vigia ). The small town of Redondo is about nine kilometers northeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1972. The construction was completed in 1981. The dam is used to supply drinking water. It is owned by the Associação de Beneficiários da Obra da Vigia .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 30 m above the foundation level (26.25 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 226.25 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 300 m and its width 10 (or 10.25) m. The volume of the dam is 284,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 31 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 250 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 500 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring was determined to be once every 100 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 224 m (maximum 224.75 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.62 km² and holds 16.725 million m³ of water - of which 15.58 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion target is 210 m.
