The valley guard is a distinctive Norway spruce in the Elendstal in the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt . Together with other large and old spruce in the vicinity, the tree is designated as a natural monument under number ND 0074 WR in the list of natural monuments in the Harz district .

It is located near the southern exit of the Elendstal on the left bank of the Kalten Bode , north of the village of Elend (Harz) , which belongs to Oberharz am Brocken .

The valley guard probably germinated in the second half of the 18th century and reached a height of about 41 meters with a trunk circumference of four meters (as of 2018).

A sign attached to the tree names the name Talwächter and identifies the tree as the strongest spruce in the Elendstal nature reserve. The trunk content is given as 13.75 solid meters . The natural monument sign is also attached to the tree trunk. Trail signs that were originally attached to the tree were moved to an adjacent wooden beam at the end of the 2010s.
