Yoshida Tamao

Yoshida Tamao ( Japanese 吉田 玉 男 , actually: Ueda Sueichi ( 上 田 末 一 ); born January 7, 1919 in Ōsaka ; † September 24, 2006 ) was a Japanese bunraku puppeteer.

Career

He began training as a puppeteer with Yoshida Tamajirō in 1933 at the age of fourteen and took the stage name Yoshida Tamao. From 1934 he appeared in a Bunraku theater in Osaka. 1940 to 1944 he did his military service. In 1946 he resumed puppetry as the lead puppeteer. In 1962 he performed for the first time abroad at the World's Fair in Seattle and in 2002 for the first time in Europe.

In 1955 he appeared as Tokubei in the resumption of Sonezaki shinjū ("Double Suicide in Sonezaki"), his star role, which he performed in 2002 for the 1111th time.

He received high Japanese awards: 1977 Living National Treasure ( ningen kokuhō ), 1978 Order of Merit on the Purple Ribbon , 1989 Order of the Rising Sun (gold rays with rosette), 1997 Asahi Prize , 2000 Person with Special Cultural Merit and 2003 Kyoto Prize .

In 1985 and 1995 he received the fourth and fourteenth National Bunraku Awards.
