The Tampereen Kauppahalli is the largest and oldest market hall in the city of Tampere in southwestern Finland .

history

The single-storey hall in a steel structure with a central arch hall was built by the architect Hjalmar Åbergin and opened in 1901. It has 110 retail spaces with around 2,100 m². The cold store and storage volume is around 18,500 m³. According to the statutes, the dealers are allowed to offer meat and fish products, eggs, butter, cheese and vegetables.

The market hall is operated by 38 companies that merged in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the market hall lost customers to supermarkets. The retailers pooled their strengths and organized a consumer-friendly structure and tightened their daily fresh range of goods, which led to the preservation of the more than one hundred year old market operation. In 1971 a cafeteria was opened. The oldest company is the butcher Lihakauppa Yrjö Wigren Oy, which is represented in the market hall from 1917 until today.

The market hall at Hämeenkatu 13 is a listed building.
