Taner Kılıç (* 1969 ) is a Turkish lawyer and the former head and honorary president of the Turkey section of Amnesty International .

Live and act

Kılıç graduated from the Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi in 1991 with a law degree . Since 1993 he has been working as a lawyer in Izmir . Kılıç is a co-founder and board member of the Turkish section of Amnesty International since 2002 and its chairman since 2014.

In addition, from 2008 to 2014 he was chairman of the non-governmental organization Mältecilerle Dayanışma Derneği (Association for Solidarity with Refugees) in Izmir, which was founded in 2007 .

On June 6, 2017, Kılıç was arrested in Izmir. On July 5, 2017, İdil Eser , Peter Steudtner and eight other human rights activists were arrested on Büyükada . The Turkish authorities combined the trial of the ten other human rights activists arrested with the trial of Kılıç.

The Turkish authorities accuse Kılıç of connections with the Gülen movement , which is held responsible for the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016 as the alleged terrorist organization FETÖ . According to media reports, Kılıç is said to have used the ByLock messenger app, which was allegedly also used within the Gülen movement. The trial against him began on October 26, 2017 in Izmir. The second day of the trial took place on November 22, 2017. On both days of the trial, Kılıç unsuccessfully applied for a release on bail. On January 31, 2018, the court ordered his conditional release. The prosecutor challenged this decision. Immediately after his release from custody, he was arrested again on the basis of a new arrest warrant from another court. On August 15, 2018, a Turkish court ordered his release; a few hours later he was released. On July 3, 2020, he was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for allegedly "membership in a terrorist organization".
