Tania Aebi

Tania Aebi (born October 7, 1966 in Switzerland ) is an American sailor and author .

At the age of 18, she sailed around the world alone with the sailing yacht Varuna (a dark red Contessa 26) between 1985 and 1987 . Except for a short passage in the Pacific Ocean (80 miles), in which she was accompanied by a friend, she was the first American woman to sail around the world alone . She has published her experiences on this trip in the book Taking the World by Storm .

Her only sailing experience before circumnavigating the world was crossing the Atlantic with her father. In 1997 Aebi became a columnist for the US sailing magazine Latitudes & Attitudes . She now lives in Corinth, Vermont .
