Life

The second married mother of two children has often been the subject of the Finnish gossip papers Seura and Ilta-Sanomat in the past . The former model, who was named Miss Finland in 1991 , went into politics a few years later. The accusation quickly became loud that she was using her fame as a beauty queen to make a political career. Other opportunities for public discussions about their private life included: a. a year-long relationship with the former Finnish Finance Minister Sauli Niinistö , the divorce of Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen , the cause of which the press suspected was an affair with Karpela, as well as the accusation that she had no book before she was appointed Minister of Culture and never went to the opera before she met Niinistö to have. Karpela repeatedly complained about the strong media interest, but heard from reputable press organs that her open attitude towards the media in cases like Niinistö contributed significantly to her media presence.

Her supporters, however, value her as a committed minister whose cultural budget is "the best in ten years". Karpela and her supporters had in the past accused Finland of a tendency towards a “sauna society”, in which men's affairs did not attract nearly as much social concern as women did.

Saarela was put on sick leave for a month in mid-2005 after a tough fight against the rainbow press, which had left her very weak. When she was back on duty, she was quoted as saying "All the chauvinism that was boiling up there only strengthened my belligerence".

In October 2005 she was photographed with a counterfeit Prada wallet during an official state visit to Slovenia . This incident once again attracted a great deal of media attention, as just a few weeks earlier, as minister of culture, she introduced a law to ban non-commercial imports of counterfeit branded goods.
