Tank Wars is the genre-defining classic among the artillery games and is also known under the alternative name Bomb .
Development history
The DOS game , which was written by Kenny Morse and released as shareware as version 1.0 in 1986, had a significant influence on all subsequent games of this genre. Until the release of Tank Wars , there were only a few games that made use of the Artillery gameplay . B. the "namesake" of the genre, the game "Artillery", which was published in the late 1970s.
The biggest innovations that made Tank Wars so influential were firstly the option to purchase weapons after a successful round and secondly the expansion of the number of players to 10. These were taken from the much better known remakes like " Scorched Earth " (1991) and "Scorched Tanks" ( Amiga , 1994), as well as the most popular representative of the genre " Worms " (1994) adopted or further developed.
Gameplay
Tank Wars can be played by 1 to 10 players in hot seat mode . If there are no human players available, computer opponents can be selected in seven different strengths. From version 3.0, teams can also be formed. Depending on the number of players, 2 to 10 tanks are placed on a randomly generated two-dimensional landscape. Each player controls a tank, but you cannot move the tank, you just set the angle of the turret and the firepower. After you have taken into account wind strength and wind direction as well as the "consistency" of the outer walls in your settings, you can fire a shot. If you can "fatally" hit an opponent with an explosive projectile, this can, under certain circumstances, drag its neighbors into the abyss with a huge explosion. If the country is fissured after a bombing, it collapses in a physically correct manner and can bury tanks in the process. The winner is whoever survives last. After a successful round, defense and target guidance systems can be purchased in addition to various weapon systems.
A wealth of possible settings, such as elastic outer borders or the type of animated background graphics, made the game unique.
