The Auto Palace petrol station

The Auto Palace is a former petrol station in the Dutch Hanseatic city of Nijmegen . It was built in 1936 to designs by architects BJ Meerman and J. van der Pijll southwest of the city center on the Graafseweg artery to 's-Hertogenbosch , is an excellent example of the New Objectivity style and is a listed monument as a Rijksmonument .

The building consists of a two-storey rectangular main building, which was built from bricks and the outer facade was whitewashed with white paint. It housed a workshop and an apartment. The windows and doors clearly stand out due to their blue color.

The twelve-sided glass kiosk in front of the corner creates an exciting contrast . It closes at the top with a striking, almost circular, widely projecting canopy, which spans the entire traffic area of the petrol station like a canopy . When the petrol station was still in operation, this porch was illuminated from below in the evening. At the rear of the petrol station, a 25-meter-high square light tower rises up with a copper needle attached to it. It originally contained the name of the NV Auto Palace petrol station .

After the Graafseweg was relocated for urban planning reasons , the petrol station lost its use and was closed in 1977. In 1993, the Nijmegen municipal administration granted the architect Koos van Lith the building permit to restore the building. Today it is used as an architecture office.
