Aunt Maja

The aunt Maja is a residential building with restaurant at the St. Johann market 8 in Saarbrücken . It is one of the oldest secular buildings in the St. Johann district and is a listed building.

The original building was erected in the second half of the 16th century. Around 1680 a new building took place, taking into account the Gothic window frames and the wooden beam ceilings, which were preserved. In 1800 there was a renovation. On pictures from the turn of the century you can see one or two restaurants in the building. Around 1920 the Toscani restaurant and Cafe Kauf were established on the ground floor .

From the mid-1950s, the red-light milieu on St. Johanner Markt and Kappenstrasse spread. Marie-Luise Weisenseel, called Maja (* 1905 in Metz , † 1976 in Saarbrücken), founded a brothel as Cafe Tante Maja , in which live music was also played. She also ran the Stern restaurant at Reichstrasse 16 near the main train station . After Maja died , the café was continued as a restaurant.
