Dance of the market women
The dance of the market women or dance of the market women is the highlight of the street carnival in Munich . It takes place annually on Shrove Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. on the Viktualienmarkt .
history
At the beginning of the 20th century, the market women dressed up and danced in front of their own stalls or with market women from the neighboring stalls at the end of the carnival. However, the custom was first mentioned in the 1950s. In the 1980s, the dance was then moved to a stage in the market's beer garden , until the tradition was revived on a larger scale in 1987. Since then, twelve market women have presented themselves on stage with the incumbent mayor and the Narrhalla .
Current
Those involved in the market dance practice the choreography four months before their performance and appear every year in imaginative and self-designed costumes that relate to what is happening in the market. Since 2004 Christian Langer has been training the market women in their dances as a trained ADTV dance teacher.
The dance of the market women and the carnival on the Viktualienmarkt (approx. 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) attract thousands of visitors every year.
