The Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics , abbreviated NBS, ( Swahili Ofisi ya Taifa ya Takwimu ya Tanzania ) is the state statistical authority of Tanzania . It was established in 2015 on the basis of the Statistics Act as an independent government agency. Its tasks are to provide census data for government institutions, business and the general public through a coordinating role within the National Statistical System (NSS). The agency is based on Kivukoni Road in central Dar es Salaam .

structure

The agency is headed by a director general, who is directly assigned an audit and legal department. The specialist authority consists of four directorates (main departments), which are subdivided into further departments.

Directorates of the NBS are:

  • Directorate of Finance, Administration & Marketing (finance, administration and marketing)
  • Directorate of Population Census and Social Statistics (population and social statistics)
  • Directorate of Economic Statistics (economic statistics)
  • Directorate of Statistical Operations (recording methods, analyzes, processes)

The statistical authority maintains other smaller offices in the regions of Tanzania.

history

Before the Statistics Act of 2015 came into force, this area of responsibility was organized in the form of a Government Executive Agency , which was established on March 26, 1999 on the basis of the Executive Agencies Act of 1997 ( Act No. 30 ). The Agency emerged from the Central Bureau of Statistics , which was a division of the state Planning Commission .

The determination of population data in the area of today's Tanzania can be traced back to the year 1910, when the country was still the colony of German East Africa . Census activities according to modern criteria are said to have existed since 1958.

The Statistics Act ( Act No. 1 of 2002 ), enacted in 2002 , repealed the Statistics Ordinance of 1961.

After the formation of today's country, the unification of the Republic of Tanganyika and the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba, in 1964, several censuses were carried out in the country (1967, 1978, 1988, 2002 and 2012). The most recent census took place from August 26th to September 8th, 2012 (in short: 2012 PHC , Population and Housing Census , in German roughly: “Population and Household Census ”). The official census time is midnight on August 25-26, 2012.

Publications

The NBS publishes statistical yearbooks, census reports, studies and other communications.
