On the Hill o 'Noth

Tap o 'Noth is a hillfort on the Hill of Noth, west of Rhynie in Aberdeenshire in Scotland .

Located at the top of the 563 meter high hill, this fort is not only one of the tallest, but also one of the oldest in Scotland. It consists of two rings of walls, an outer wall that encloses approximately 21 hectares and a massive inner wall that forms a rectangular citadel measuring 105 meters by 40 meters on the top of the hill. The inner wall was built with a wooden framework that was destroyed by fire. The scientific dating of the molten stones indicates that the fire started at the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. BC destroyed the buildings.

The excavation at the end of the 19th century revealed an eight-meter-wide wall that was preserved up to a height of 3.5 meters. There are more than 100 house floor plans within the outer wall. There was a large cistern at the south end of the citadel . Despite its location, this fort was home to a large tribal group or kingdom of the Picts at a time when the climate was warm and arid, as evidenced by the tombs of Rhynie .

Nearby are the Craw Stane, a class 1 Pictish symbol stone, and the Mill of Noth menhirs .
