The Tarabundi vole ( Microtus oaxacensis ) is a rodent in the genus of field mice that is found in Mexico . The German name refers to a ranch in the vicinity of which the type specimen was found.

features

This field mouse reaches a total length of 159 to 163 mm, a tail length of 31 to 38 mm and a weight of 37 to 43 g. It has hind feet 21 to 23 mm long and ears 12 to 15 mm long. As with many other field mice, there are small eyes and rounded ears that are not bare. The fur on the upper side consists mainly of completely black hair as well as scattered black hair with an ocher tip. On the underside, the fur is lighter and the limbs are uniformly black. That's why the bright white toenails are particularly noticeable. In contrast to the Mexican vole ( Microtus mexicanus ), females have two pairs of teats on their belly. There are further deviations from other Mexican field mice, such as the Zempoaltépec vole ( Microtus umbrosus ), in the structure of the molars .

Distribution and way of life

The Tarabundi vole is endemic to the Sierra de Juárez Mountains in the Mexican state of Oaxaca . The distribution area is 1500 to 2500 meters above sea level. Cloud forests and cool evergreen rainforests serve as habitats . Occasionally moist coniferous forests are visited.

Presumably there is only one young per litter in this field mouse. Specimens in captivity were successfully fed wild strawberry plants.

status

The total stock is decreasing due to deforestation. The IUCN lists the Tarabundi Vole also because of their limited distribution as endangered (Endangered) .
