Tarasios
Tarasios ( Greek Ταράσιος ; * 730 ; † February 25, 806 ) was Patriarch of Constantinople from 784 to 806 . He is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox and Catholic Churches . Remembrance days are February 25 (Orthodox) and February 18 (Catholic).
Life
Tarasios came from an influential family in Constantinople . He became a senator. On December 25, 784 he was introduced as Patriarch of Constantinople. Empress Irene had chosen him in order to be able to reintroduce image worship . In 787 the 7th Ecumenical Council took place in Nicaea under his chairmanship . This again allowed the worship of icons in the church.
Tarasios died on February 25, 806.
