Pocket ammunition

Pocket ammunition for assault rifle 90

The bag of ammunition was to autumn 2007 every member of the Swiss Army given at the end of recruit school. An exception was in some cases the long- serving staff who only interrupt their work for vacation days and otherwise do it in one go.

The pocket ammunition, like the assault rifle , had to be kept at home. The box was only allowed to be opened if a war mobilization was ordered , in order to ensure self-protection when moving in. It was to be taken unopened to any service.

Handover and withdrawal of pocket ammunition

In 1892 an emergency ammunition of 30 rounds was released to the infantry for the first time , but it was withdrawn again in 1899 due to abuse. In 1939 the border guards and in 1940 the entire army were equipped with pocket ammunition, which was withdrawn shortly after the end of the war (except for officers for their pistols). In 1952, the development of the Cold War made it appear necessary to again issue pocket ammunition to all troops in order to ensure rapid mobilization.

According to Swiss federal law ( DDPS Ordinance on the Personal Equipment of Army Members; VPAA-VBS; 514.101 Art. 7), pocket ammunition is only given to active members of the Army. Pocket ammunition must be returned when transferring to the reserve, returning equipment or taking personal weapons.

On 26 October 2007 it was announced that the majority of the active members of the army must deliver for storing her bag ammunition. The VPAA-VBS will be adapted accordingly. Since the end of 2009, only selected alarm formations and military security have had the pocket ammunition. A new submission would be considered if the security situation changes.

Only after three and a half years did the Swiss military almost complete the mandate of the national parliament. It is still unclear where their ammunition has gone to 1,047 members of the army.
