Tasek Merimbun

Tasek Merimbun is the largest lake in Brunei . It is located in Mukim Rambai in the Tutong district , about 70 km from the capital Bandar Seri Begawan .

geography

The S-shaped lake is located 27 km south of the district capital Tutong , the next larger settlement is Mukim Rambai . The lake is located in the hinterland of Brunei in the rainforest . The area was placed under protection as the Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park (Taman Warisan Tasek Merimbun, 7800 ha). The lake itself consists of several large areas, which are divided into three large areas from east to west by two islands (Pulau Labi-Labi; Pulau Jurundung) and vegetation. The lake drains northwest to the Tutong River . The waters of the Tasek Merimbun are dark brown; The black water is created by washing out tannins from plant residues ( detritus ), which are continuously introduced. There is abundant tropical flora and fauna, and visitors can take boat tours. One of the islands can be visited via a wooden bridge.

ASEAN Heritage Park

In 1967 the first director of the Brunei Museum Department suggested protecting Tasek Merimbun as a valuable natural treasure and wildlife sanctuary . A survey from 1983–84 on biodiversity and socio-economy led to the discovery of a rare white-collared fruit bat ( Megaerops wetmorei ). On November 29, 1984, the area was designated the Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park as the eleventh ASEAN Heritage Park .
