Taslima Akhter

Taslima Akhter (* 1974 in Dhaka ) is a photographer from Bangladesh who documents the circumstances in her country. Her main motif is in cramped conditions, which trigger anxiety and discomfort in the viewer.

Life

Akhter studied administrative science at her hometown university and then photography at the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute. Since then she has been working as a freelance photographer and lecturer in photojournalism at Pathshala . She also works as the coordinator of the "Bangladesh Garment Workers Solidarity", an organization that supports textile workers in Bangladesh.

Awards

In 2014 she was awarded the LeadAward in Gold ( Photography of the Year ). Her photo shows two workers embracing in a collapsed textile factory.

In 2013 Time Magazine selected her photo as one of the “Top 10 photos of the year” and she received the “Best Photographer Award” at the 5th Dali International Photography Exhibition in China. Her photo series "The Life and Struggle of Garment Workers" won the 3rd prize of the "Julia Margaret Cameron Award".
