Tasman is an HTML rendering engine from Microsoft and was first introduced with the Macintosh version of Internet Explorer 5 . Tasman should support the web standards created by the World Wide Web Consortium better than the Trident engine used so far . At the time of publication, Tasman was considered to be the engine with the best support for web standards such as HTML and CSS. The development of Internet Explorer for Mac has since been discontinued, but newer versions of the Tasman engine are still used in various Microsoft products, such as Microsoft Office 2004/2008 or MSN for Mac OS X.

The Tasman engine was developed under the direction of Tantek Çelik .

Versions

The first version of the Tasman engine (referred to as "v0") was released on March 27, 2000 with Internet Explorer 5 Macintosh Edition . With the appearance of Internet Explorer 5.1 for Mac , version 0.1 of the engine followed.

On May 15, 2003 Microsoft presented the subscription-based browser MSN for Mac OS X , which came up with Tasman version 0.9. In a message to the Mac Internet Explorer Talk newsgroup , then Internet Explorer for Mac manager Jimmy Grewal listed some improvements:

  • Full Unicode support.
  • Improved CSS support (CSS3 Selectors, CSS TV Profile and @media).
  • Improved support for the DOM .
  • XHTML 1.0 and 1.1 support (although this was not yet activated in MSN for Mac OS X).
  • Improved support for various Mac OS X functions, including: CoreGraphics , ATSUI and CFSocket networking.

On May 11, 2004, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac was released, which used a version of the Tasman engine in its Entourage email software .
