Tathan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Tathan (also: Tatheus ) is a Celtic saint who probably came to Wales from Ireland , where he founded a church. He is considered the early abbot of Caerwent . In Llanvaches , near Caerwent, a church is dedicated to him (Llandathan), just as in St. Athan .

Lore

William Jenkins Rees describes in his book Lives of the Cambro British Saints Tathan as the son of the Irish King Tathetus . Tathan received a good education and devoted himself to spiritual studies. Rather than succeeding his father as king, Tathan followed an angel's direction and sailed for Britain , taking eight disciples with him. His boat sailed up the Severn and landed in the medieval kingdom of Gwent . Tathan was honored by King Caradoc and founded a monastery school near Venta Silurum near today's Caerwent. The students came from far and wide. King Gwynllyw of Gwynllŵg also sent his son, Cadoc , to receive lessons there at the age of seven. Tathan then founded a church with a gift from Caradoc's son, Ynyr .

Trivia

The American football player Tathan "Tate" Martell has this name as his first name.
