Pigeon tower (Crail)
The Crail Pigeon Tower is a pigeon tower in the Scottish town of Crail in the Council Area Fife . In 1972 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
The pigeon tower probably comes from the 16th century. It is related to the Crail Priory , of which nothing is preserved today. In 1962 the pigeon tower was restored.
description
Crail's pigeon tower stands in a field along a historic path from Nethergate Road to the former priory not far from the north bank of the Firth of Forth . The round pigeon tower has an inside diameter of 3.4 m. The quarry stone masonry , which tapers towards the top, is around 90 cm thick. The outside of the facade is plastered with Harl . It closes with a flat, stylized crenellated reinforcement. It is surrounded by a flat lantern with entry holes. A simple opening leads into the interior on the south side. Stone nesting boxes are lined up there.
