Tayfur Sökmen (* 1892 in Gaziantep ; † March 3, 1980 in İstanbul ) was a Turkish politician and the first and only President of Hatay State .

Life

Sökmen graduated from elementary school in Kırıkhan , after which he received private lessons. During the First World War , Sökmen worked in the secret service. After the war he took part in the Turkish war of liberation against the French occupation in Sanjak Alexandrette .

Sökmen stayed in Vienna from 1924 to 1926 . In 1927 he lived again for a short time in Sanjak Alexandrette, where he was exposed to pressure from the French occupying forces. Therefore, he lived first in Gaziantep, Adana and finally in İstanbul.

In 1935 he was elected to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as an independent MP for the Province of Antalya . On September 2, 1938, Hatay State was proclaimed and Tayfur Sökmen became President. After Hatay joined Turkey on June 29, 1939 , his brief presidency ended. Until 1950 Sökmen was a member of parliament for the province of Antalya and from 1950 to 1954 for the province of Hatay . After 1975 he withdrew from politics and died on March 3, 1980 in İstanbul.
