Te Umanibong, museum house

Te Umanibong (also called Umwanibong in recent spelling), the Kiribati National Cultural Center and Museum, is the name of an ethnological museum of the Kiribati State . It is located in the center of Bikenibeu and thus in the middle of the capital South Tarawa . The word is made up of uma ni bong , which means 'star house' in German . Administratively it is subordinate to the Kiribati Ministry of Internal and Social Affairs as a cultural area. The current director is Ten Tekautu Ioane.

Internationally it is one of the smallest houses in the field of folklore museums and shows around 250 exhibits, artefacts with historical and cultural significance; it also offers around 1,500 object references from other collections. In terms of content, it is thus supplemented elsewhere by exhibits from the collections in the South Sea Department of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin , the Peabody Museum , the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Hawaii and other institutions in Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the museum building, Te Umanibong also shows a traditional meeting house, the Maneaba (Manweaba).

It is affiliated with the Pacific Islands Museums Association (PIMA) and the Council of Pacific Arts (CPA) .
