Teach For Austria is a non-profit , Austrian educational initiative based in Vienna with the aim of giving more schoolchildren and children access to excellent education and building a national movement to eliminate educational injustice. For this purpose, Teach For Austria recruits university graduates from all fields of study who teach for two years as teachers with a full teaching obligation or at kindergartens with full educational responsibility as part of the “Teach For Austria Fellow Program” at secondary schools. The aim of the program is to improve equal opportunities in education.

history

Teach For Austria was founded in 2011 as a non-profit limited company by the management consultant and former head of the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, Walter Emberger, based on the model of Teach For America in the USA and Teach First UK in Great Britain, organizations that pursue similar goals. Teach For Austria is thus part of the international Teach For All network, to which another 52 independent country organizations belong. Teach For All supports the establishment of independent organizations in other countries, for example Teach First Germany .

Teach For All and Teach For America were founded in 1990 by Wendy Kopp , named one of Fortune's 50 Most Influential Leaders in the World.

In the first year of the Teach For Austria program (2012/13), 24 so-called “Fellows” were deployed at schools, mainly in Vienna, and a further 32 were added in the second year of the program (2013/14). The fellowship program started in Lower Austria in 2016 and in Upper Austria in 2018. The program is to be extended to other federal states.

Since autumn 2019, twelve Teach For Austria Fellows have been employed in the kindergarten for the first time.

The program

University graduates from all fields of study (with the exception of teacher training students) are recruited through a multi-stage, selective selection process. These are trained over several weeks in an online campus and a summer academy, in order to then work as full-time teachers and educators at challenging schools and kindergartens (so-called fellows). Everyone who takes part in the program is a career changer. You work with children and young people from low-income, educationally disadvantaged families.

The focus here is on middle schools, cooperative middle schools, Viennese middle schools and polytechnical schools and kindergartens in Vienna, Lower Austria and Upper Austria with a high proportion of children with a migration background and children from educational backgrounds. At the beginning of each program year, the Fellows take on full responsibility for education and a full teaching commitment in the schools. During the two years that they work as fellows at schools and kindergartens, they are continuously accompanied and continuously trained by Teach For Austria.

Program effect

The aim of the program is to improve the academic performance of schoolchildren and kindergarten children. Among other things, an attempt is made to strengthen self-motivation and the belief in the children's own abilities. For this purpose, Fellows use models of the effects of praise and blame on the learner's self-image and reflect on the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy and the concept of the so-called “stereotype threat”. Evaluations of the program effectiveness of sister organizations in other countries, which were carried out by scientific institutions and / or by national authorities, indicate that participants in the various programs make significant learning gains possible. In Austria, the motivation and interest structure of the fellows has so far been ascertained and evaluated as part of an accompanying scientific study.

From 2016 to 2019 Teach For Austria carried out the Erasmus + project "A New Way for New Talents in Teaching". The Erasmus + project "NEWTT" analyzed the lateral entry models of Teach For organizations in Austria, Bulgaria, Latvia, Romania and Spain. The German University of Duisburg-Essen provided scientific support for the entire project. The University of Duisburg-Essen evaluated a total of 92 Austrian teachers in their first two years of teaching. The participants were divided into two groups: Graduates from teacher training colleges and Teach For Austria Fellows - selected lateral entrants who, accompanied by the Teach For Austria program, teach as full teachers.

Alumni

Around 50% of the alumni of the Teach For Austria Fellow Program stay at their school for another year after completing the program. Other alumni found start-ups, switch to the private sector, acquire post-docs or work in development cooperation.

Start-ups founded by alumni include “More than one perspective”, the “New Austrian Coding School” and the “Vienna Hobby Lobby”.

Concept and funding

Teach For Austria non-profit GmbH employs around 35 people, who are mainly employed in the areas of organizational development, fundraising, recruiting, selection, training and support for the fellows. In addition, Teach For Austria is supported by around 100 volunteer employees who work in the areas of campus recruitment, organization, event management and mentoring, among other things.

While the Fellows' salaries are paid by the school authorities, almost 95% of the Teach For Austria Fellow Program is financed by private sponsors and foundations. The program was founded with the support of the Boston Consulting Group, the Association of Industrialists in Vienna and Salzburg, the Heinzel Group and the Berndorf Private Foundation. The supporters include the Berndorf Private Foundation, the Heinzel Group , Umdasch, Miba, Swarovski Foundation, Mondi and the Kahane Foundation.
