Teachmaster is a free vocabulary trainer for Windows . Teachmaster is freeware . In contrast to other vocabulary trainers, you can import your own vocabulary lists.

functionality

Teachmaster consists of four modules: editor, learning program, converter and quiz.

  1. The vocabulary is entered in the editor (lesson by lesson). Five entries are possible per set of vocabulary: Lesson, Language 1, Language 2, synonyms and remarks. Various tools in the editor make it easy to manage and organize the vocabulary.
  2. The vocabulary is learned in the tutorial . There are several learning methods available. The well-known card box method and the less well-known solitaire method , which is particularly suitable for completely unknown vocabulary, should be emphasized . The long-term learning success can be analyzed using statistics.
  3. The converter ensures the connection of Teachmaster to other programs. Thanks to CSV support, for example, importing / exporting Excel data is no problem.
  4. The quiz is a simple multiple choice quiz.

Technical details

The Windows software was written in C ++ using the Borland C ++ Builder. The * .vok2 file format - in which the vocabulary is saved - is XML .

The program interface is multilingual (standard: German and English). By integrating the appropriate language files, which are available for download on the website, the program interface is available in other languages.

Due to the support of TrueType fonts and different character sets, almost all languages can be learned, especially those with “special characters” (Czech, Russian, Croatian, Greek, Japanese etc.).

The software runs from Windows 95 . When using the Wine runtime environment, it can also be operated under Linux . With Parallels , the program can also Mac OS X to operate.

Educational psychological background

The two learning methods " card box " and "solitaire method" are taken from the book "How to learn to learn" by Sebastian Leitner . The basic ideas for learning vocabulary are as follows:

  1. Only the unknown vocabulary should be learned and not the already known (i.e.: selection ).
  2. Learning should take place at reasonable intervals (i.e.: repetition ).

It is true that these specifications could also be adhered to manually with a “real” file box, slip of paper and pen, but the software solution allows this to be done fully automatically at the push of a button.

More details on the psychology of vocabulary learning are described in a separate chapter of the online manual.

Target group and distribution of the software

With enough computer skills, even fifth graders can use the software without any problems. In addition to schoolchildren and students, the software is also aimed at older language learners who (possibly autodidactically ) want to learn their vocabulary efficiently.
