The Teatro Nacional Francisco Gavidia is a cultural center for the performing arts in the city of San Miquel , El Salvador .

history

In 1901 the executive of the city of San Miguel (Junta de Fomento de San Miguel) decided to build a city theater. The Belgian engineer Marcos Letona, who was a professor at the Université catholique de Louvain , was commissioned to plan the theater . The construction work was started by the builder Manuel Aragón on January 1, 1903 and lasted until December 25, 1908. The execution of the theater resembles a miniature version of the Opéra National de Paris .

The theater was built in the neoclassical style . On an area of ​​1075 m² there are 450 seats, which are spread over two levels. The foyer is also on the first floor . The great hall is shaped like a lying lyre .

In 1909 the city theater was opened with the performance of La viuda alegre , an operetta in three acts by Franz Lehár . From 1914 to 1925 the building was also used for film screenings.

Namesake

On March 27, 1939, the city theater was renamed in honor of the famous Salvadoran humanist Francisco Gavidia .
