Bartolomeo Carlo Romilli (born March 14, 1795 in Bergamo , † May 7, 1859 in Milan ) was Archbishop of Milan .

Life

Romilli, from a noble family, was ordained deacon on May 31, 1817 and seven months later priestly . He then worked as a literature professor in his home diocese of Bergamo .

On October 3, 1845 he was by Pope Gregory XVI. appointed the new Bishop of Cremona . He was ordained bishop only on June 21, 1846 by Carlo Gritti Morlacchi , Bishop of Bergamo . In Cremona he was able to successfully organize donations to alleviate a famine. A year later, Bartolomeo Carlo Romilli became Archbishop of Milan; his choice was influenced by influential people in the city, among others. In view of the revolutions of 1848 and the Italian aspirations for independence, he took a neutral position between the freedom fighters and the Habsburgs; this attitude was also favored by the political division of the clergy. Romilli welcomed the negotiations on the Concordat concluded in 1855 between the Austrian imperial court and the Papal States. Spiritually, he strove for a restoration based on the example of St. Charles Borromeo . In poor health, he suffered a stroke at the end of 1857 and was henceforth supported by his vicar general and later successor Paolo Angelo Ballerini . He finally died in May 1859.
