Paolo Angelo Ballerini (born September 14, 1814 in Milan , † March 27, 1897 in Seregno ) was Archbishop of Milan and Latin Patriarch of Alexandria .

Life

Ballerini was ordained a priest in July 1837 . In 1857 he became vicar general of the Archdiocese of Milan. After Archbishop Bartolomeo Carlo Romilli suffered a stroke in 1858, he took on deputy functions.

After Romilli's death, Pope Pius IX appointed him . on June 20, 1859 as Archbishop of Milan. However, the people of Milan refused to recognize it and were supported by the Italian government. The episcopal ordination received his first on December 8, 1860 Carlo Caccia Dominioni , auxiliary bishop of Milan. Even in his eight-year tenure, Ballerini frequently led disputes with the population, which was due to his uncompromising rejection of liberal reforms. From 1861 he had to live in exile in the Monza seminary .

On March 27, 1867, he laid down the leadership of the Archdiocese and became Latin Patriarch of Alexandria. Since this was an honorary title, Ballerini lived from the appointment until his death in Seregno, near Milan. He took part in the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870 and supported the dogma of papal infallibility . Ballerini died in 1897 at the age of 82.
