museum

The museum building in the Büschergrund district has consisted of four interconnected components since 2015. The large half-timbered hall with a brick extension for the steam engine and an old fire brigade syringe house. A new, modern extension was added in 2015.

The half-timbered hall comes from Steeg near Friesenhagen, 10 km away, which was built in 1952 as a sawmill by the Fürstlich-Hatzfeld administration. It has a footprint of 40 × 20 meters and is 12 meters high. While this part of the building was built in typical Siegerland half-timbered construction, the attached syringe house was built in the North German half-timbered style. The construction of this former municipal syringe house on the Sieghütte in Siegen was built around 1900 by the city architect at the time, who came from Northern Germany. The old sawmill was dismantled at its former location and transported to Freudenberg, the syringe house was already dismantled.

Cafe "Schraubstübchen" in the Freudenberg Technology Museum

The approximately 100 year old fire station was put into storage by a lover in the 1980s after it was demolished. However, the beam construction had to be rebuilt according to the old plans during the reconstruction, as the old beams could no longer be used. In this building is the museum cafe "Schraubstübchen".

The new extension was funded as part of the Regionale 2013 . This modern extension houses the new entrance area of the museum, a multi-purpose room for events and, on the upper floor, a room for extracurricular learning. This new part of the building was opened in 2015 as part of a special exhibition about the universal scholar Leonardo da Vinci.

Möller steam engine from the former glue factory in Nöll, built in 1904

In the old sawmill hall, in addition to the steam engine and mechanical workshop, commercial vehicles (especially tractors and motorcycles ) as well as smaller agricultural machines and devices are shown, which are located on the gallery in the hall's attic. The oldest exhibit in the museum is a self-propelled band saw from 1923, the youngest a Hanomag tractor from the 1960s.

Machine shop

The heart of the museum is the steam engine at its original location. The steam engine No. 817 from 1904, built by the Möller company in Brackwede, is the last relic of the Nöll glue factory, which was located here. Today it drives a complete mechanical workshop via a transmission with large cardan shafts , which the technology museum has taken over from the Döring company from Hagen . This combination of the steam engine with the 25 machine tools that are around 100 years old is a rarity. The special thing about it: The machine factory is put into operation on Sundays and during group tours. Most of the lathes , planers, milling machines , punches, drills and saws date from before 1920. The workshop was in operation until 1979 without any major changes and has been in a “slumber” ever since.

Right next to the steam engine and the mechanical workshop, the museum also operates a forge . On the ground floor of the large hall there is also a locomobile and stationary engines and a changing exhibition of old tractors and vintage trucks. A collection of historical motorcycles complements this area.

Vehicle hall

The large gallery houses smaller agricultural machines and implements, including historical plows and a cart. An old loom from 1765 has stood on the gallery since 2005 , and there is also an exhibition on the history of the Freudenberg glue, leather and felt industry and the management of the Siegerland Hauberg.

Diesel roller from the Krauss-Maffei company from 1929

Outside there is a Lanz locomobile, a rare diesel roller from the KraussMaffei company from 1929 and a large steam hammer , as well as a rubber kneader from the Freudenberg company Harburg-Freudenberger.

The model railway at the northern end of the museum area is particularly interesting for children. This system, which is in operation during larger events and good weather, transports up to 20 children on the system with 5 and 7.25 inch gauge with its own model steam locomotive or model diesel locomotive .

In addition, the technology museum in the city of Freudenberg set up several historical machines at traffic junctions. For example, a friction press was installed on a newly built roundabout in the south of the city of Freudenberg in 2009.

Special exhibitions

In 2012, unique copies of Peter Lustig's dandelion show were shown. The exhibition was initially supposed to take place for 12 weeks, but was initially extended until the end of October 2012 due to the great interest. In 2013, the exhibition was again a guest in the Museum of Technology. For this exhibition, the trailer was faithfully reproduced by Peter Lustig.

In November 2015, the new extension was opened with a large exhibition about the universal genius Leonardo da Vinci .

In November 2016 the exhibition Tour of the Senses was a guest in the Museum of Technology.

In November 2017, the exhibition Mathematics at your fingertips was on view in the Museum of Technology.

The year 2018 was dominated by the special exhibition on 70 years of the Augsburger Puppenkiste .

history

On January 5, 1991, 25 people founded the association "Friends of historic vehicles Freudenberg eV" , which today has around 250 members. This association was renamed in 2014 and is now called: "Friends of historical technology Freudenberg eV" Initially, a hall was temporarily rented and at the beginning of June 1991 a classic car show was shown, which attracted around 1000 visitors. In the following years, further classic car festivals were organized.

When the idea of building a museum arose, an entrepreneur from the Freudenberg region gave the association a half-timbered hall that he owned . The club members had to dismantle them themselves and disassemble them so that they could be transported to Freudenberg. This was done in part by the army aviators of the Bundeswehr as part of a training flight. Three years later, after more than 20,000 hours of work, the construction was finished. In addition to their own contribution, sponsors also contributed financially to this project. In June 2002 the technology museum was opened, combined with a classic car meeting.
