The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) (Technological University of Malaysia) in Johor Bahru , State of Johor is the oldest state technical university in Malaysia . It was founded in 1904 as a technical school and is now a research university with over 20,000 students. The motto of the university is Kerana Tuhan Untuk Manusia (For God to the people).

history

The predecessor institution was founded in 1904 as a technical school to train technical assistants for the public service in Malaysia. The students attended the courses on offer part-time after their work. In 1941, the Advisory Committee of Technical Schools and the Education proposed converting the school into a technical college . The planning for this university had to be postponed due to the Japanese occupation during World War II . After the war, the school reopened in 1946 and converted into a technical college on a newly built campus in 1955. In the first years no academic degrees were awarded, only diplomas in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, surveying and architecture. In 1958 about 320 students studied at the university and in 1960 the first academic degrees were awarded. Due to the fast growing economy in Malaysia it was planned to convert the college into a university. In 1972, the university was renamed Institut Teknologi Kebangsaan (ITK) and received university status. This was given its current name in 1975. In the following years the faculties expanded and in the 1990s the first non-technical faculties were founded.
