Yabuta Teijirō

Yabuta Teijirō ( Japanese 藪 田 貞 治郎 ; * December 16, 1888 , in Ōtsu , Shiga Prefecture ; † July 20, 1977 , Tokyo Prefecture ) was a Japanese agrochemist who was one of the pioneers in researching gibberellins .

biography

Yabuta Teijirō studied at the Imperial University of Tōkyō and received her doctorate in 1917 with a thesis on kojic acid . In 1926 he went to Taiwan and worked with Eiichi Kurosawa . In 1933 Yabuta returned to Japan and became a professor at Tōkyō University. Shortly afterwards he identified fusaric acid (1934). In 1935 Teijirō Yabuta was able to isolate a crystalline substance as a secondary metabolite from the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi , which he therefore named "Gibberellin". This fungus causes excessive growth in young rice seedlings and is responsible for Bakanae disease ( 馬鹿 苗 病 , bakanae-byō , Japanese for "crazy seedling disease").

Yabuta became a member of the Japanese Academy of Sciences , received the Academy Award in 1943 and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1964.
