Tekle Giyorgis II.
Tekle Giyorgis II ( Ethiop . ተክለ ጊዮርጊስ, before his coronation Wagshum Gobeze ዋግሹም ጎበዜ; † 1873 ) was emperor ( amhar .: Negus Negest , "King of kings") of Abyssinia from 1868 to 1871 .
Life
On his father's side, Tekle Giyorgis was a descendant of the old Zagwe dynasty , which had been disempowered in the 13th century by the Solomonic dynasty , from which his mother also descended, and then withdrew to Wag and Lasta (hence the title Wag Shum ). On this double legacy, Tekle Giyorgis, who was governor of Amhara and Lasta, based his not undisputed claim to the imperial throne. First he was able to prevail against his competitors for the imperial throne and proclaim himself emperor on June 11, 1868. The coronation took place in Debre Zebit in August . However, Tekle Giyorgis II soon faced danger from his brother-in-law, Dejazmach Kassai (also: Kas (s) a ), who finally defeated the emperor in the battle of Assam (near Adua ) on July 11, 1871, and took himself prisoner even when Yohannes IV was crowned emperor. Tekle Giyorgis II died in captivity the following year.
