The elongated lentil mussel ( Tellimya ferruginosa ) is a type of mussel from the family of lentil mussels (Montacutidae). It is distributed throughout the North Atlantic and into the Mediterranean .

features

The equally-lobed, rather inflated shells are elongated-elliptical in outline, about twice as long as they are high. They are up to nine millimeters long. The vertebra sits well behind the center, about a quarter of the way from the rear edge. The anterior margin is well rounded, the anterior dorsal margin near the vertebra straight, then gently rounded. The posterior dorsal margin runs straight behind the vertebra for a short distance, is then bent at an obtuse angle, the posterior margin then continues straight and is well rounded into the ventral margin. The ventral margin is moderately deeply rounded. The inner edge of the case is smooth.

The ligament is located internally in a pit below and behind the vertebrae. The lock on the right door has a single anterior cardinal tooth. In the left flap, however, there is only a single anterior lateral tooth. The surface line is entire and not indented. The anterior sphincter impression is slightly larger than the posterior sphincter impression.

The ornamentation consists of very fine, somewhat irregular concentric growth strips. The periostracum is thin, brownish in color and often covered with a rust-brown crust. The thin skin is whitish, the surface shiny.

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The range of the species extends in the North Atlantic from the Arctic to North Africa and into the Mediterranean , in the western North Atlantic to the New England states of the USA . They occur there from the shallow subtidal to about 2500 meters water depth.

The mussels live at least as juveniles with byssus attached to the spines of sea urchins (e.g. Spatangus purpureus , Echinocardium cordatum ) near their anal opening, later also freely near the anal opening. The adult animals can also live freely in the sediment without sea urchins. The animals are protandric hermaphrodites .

Taxonomy

The taxon was established by Montagu in 1808 as Mya ferruginosa . The species was frequently added to the genus Montacuta Turton, 1822. It is the type species of the genus Tellimya Brown, 1827.
