Tello Alfonso of Castile

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tello Alfonso of Castile (Don Tello, * 1337 in Seville , † October 15, 1370 ) was Lord of Biscay , first Lord of Aguilar de Campoo and Count of Castañeda . He was the seventh illegitimate son of King Alfonso XI. of Castile and Leonor de Guzman . Thus he was the brother of Henry of Trastamara and Fadrique of Castile and the half-brother of King Peter the Cruel .

Although he received the rule of Biscay from King Peter through his arranged marriage to the widow of the incumbent, Johanna von Lara, he supported his brothers in their revolt against the king, who he blamed for the death of his mother (1351). In 1359 his wife also fell victim to the king.

In 1367 he commanded the Franco-Castilian troops in the defeat of Nájera by Peter's army.

After his death in 1370, Biscay was united with the Castilian crown. Castañeda County and Aguilar de Campoo dominion passed to his descendants.
