Tempel is a heavily eroded impact crater on the front of the moon west of the Mare Tranquillitatis , the western edge of which is covered by the crater Agrippa . The wall is irregular and completely leveled in places.
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German astronomer Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
