A temperature field is a scalar-valued function with a value range from 0 to infinity (when the temperature is specified in Kelvin , from approximately −273 to infinity when specified in degrees Celsius ), which is defined on the entire three-dimensional space or subsets of it. A temperature field assigns a temperature to each point in its definition area . The definition range of a temperature field is usually related to reality. For example, a temperature field can show the temperature distribution within an object or the outside temperature in a country.

Examples and illustration

For the sake of clarity, temperature fields are often displayed as false-color images. A certain color stands for a certain temperature (sometimes also for a larger temperature range). Colors that the human mind perceives as warm, such as red and yellow, often represent higher temperatures, while colder colors such as blue and green mean lower temperatures. Monochrome representations in which the color intensity represents a temperature or a temperature range are also common . Such images are used, for example, when building a house. The thermal image of a house shows where a particularly large amount of heat is lost and where additional thermal insulation is installed. The representation of temperature fields in weather reports in the form of temperature overview maps is particularly well known.
