Temple protestant (Sainte-Croix-de-Caderle)
The Temple protestant (German: Evangelical Church) is a church building in the United Protestant Church of France in Sainte-Croix-de-Caderle in the southern foothills of the Cevennes in the Gard (Region Occitan ).
history
According to archaeological investigations, the church goes back to a Carolingian foundation building from the turn of the 10th to the 11th century. Today's church is a Romanesque building from the 12th century . However, the first written confirmation of a sacred building there dates from October 1420.
After the Reformation was introduced in the village and in the entire Cevennes region , Sainte-Croix-de-Caderle came back into the hands of the Catholics in the course of the Huguenot Wars in 1580. The church, badly damaged during the fighting, was rebuilt between 1653 and 1663. During the Camisard War , the church burned on November 25, 1703, but the damage was obviously not too serious. After the French Revolution, the church and cemetery were transferred to Protestant worship in 1802 as the number of Reformed people in the region remained high.
