The Temple protestant (German: Evangelical Church) is a church building of the United Protestant Church of France in Autun in the Saône-et-Loire department in Burgundy . The church building is located in a converted part of the former Roman city gate Porte Saint-André and has been classified as a Monument historique with the gate since 1846 .

history

A church consecrated to the Apostle Andreas ( St-André ) has been documented in the northern flank tower of the city gate since 1250. The church also had a cemetery. Later parts of the gate were incorporated into the church and outbuildings were built. After the French Revolution, the church was profaned and used as an apartment and warehouse. In 1844, the French state bought the church and gate and, under the direction of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, had the structure restored between 1847 and 1849.

After the Protestants Autuns were expelled from the city in 1683, there were Protestant services there again in 1905, which initially had to do without their own church building. After long efforts, the Reformed Church Congregation, which was founded in the 1960s a. a. were carried out with donations from the Reformed Church in Zurich, renovate the former St-Andre church and use it as a Temple Protestant on April 24, 1966. The church is a simple, almost east-facing hall building with a semicircular apse. There is a Gothic portal in the west facade .
