The Temple protestant (German: Evangelical Church) is a church building of the United Protestant Church of France in La Rochelle in the Charente-Maritime department ( Nouvelle-Aquitaine region ). The church was originally the Franciscan monastery church . The facade of the church and the cloister immediately to the north have been monument historique since 1924 .

history

After the Counter-Reformation was implemented , the Franciscans settled in La Rochelle in 1629 to support the revival of Catholic life in the city. The monastery church they built burned down in 1705 and was rebuilt the following year. After the revolution, the church was handed over to the Reformed in 1798 , who retained the facade, but turned the worship room into a Calvinist preaching church. In the 19th century, the monastery of the Dames Blanches settled in the former Franciscan convent and built its own chapel directly on the southern wall of the Temple Protestant.
