The Tengissee ( Kazakh Теңіз ; Russian Тенгиз ) is a salt lake in Kazakhstan . The lake is located in the middle of the Kazakh threshold .
The lake is 1590 km² in size, up to 8 m deep and has numerous islands. The Nura River flows into the lake, but it has no outflow. The Soyuz spaceship Soyuz 23 landed in it in 1976.
Korgalzhyn nature reserve
The lake and the surrounding steppe areas are protected by the Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve . One of the special features is one of the northernmost populations of flamingos. There are also nun cranes, pelicans and various birds of prey. A total of 300 bird species live in the reserve. The reserve is an important stopover for migratory birds and is home to one of the largest concentrations of birds in all of Asia. The Tengissee alone can feed around 15 million birds. The landscape around the lake is dominated by treeless steppes. Wolves, marmots and saiga antelopes live here .
The protected area has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Saryarka - Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan .
The lake is listed as an important bird area in the Ramsar List .
