Ténoch

Ténoch (* 1299 in Cuauhmixtitlan; † 1363 ibid) was a legendary leader of the Mexica , with whom the Aztec kings began according to the historiography of the Aztecs .
Life
According to legend, Ténoch led the subjugation of the city of Colhuacán in the southeast of Lake Texcoco in the high valley of Mexico in 1318 . Even if the Mexica had to pay tribute to the Tepanecs at that time , this laid the foundation for the later Aztec empire. After this success, Ténoch rose to the position of Supreme Priest of the Mexica, who was also the political leader of the people at the time. Under him, the island on which the Mexica settled was expanded into a city and received its first pyramid temple. The militarization of the tribe began, the nobility consolidated their power.
His successor Acamapichtli named the city of Mexica to him in honor of Cuauhmixtitlan in Tenochtitlán , "City of Ténoch". The components of the name Ténoch can still be found today in the Mexican coat of arms : tetl is the rock, nōchtli means prickly pear .
