Tenthredo marginella is a species from the family of sawfly (Tenthredinidae).
Appearance
Tenthredo marginella is a black and yellow sawfly. It reaches a body size of 9–12 mm. The head and trunk are predominantly black. The head shield and the underside of the mandibles are yellow. The feelers are 9 sections. The lowest antennae is yellow while the rest are black. The abdomen is black with a yellow stripe on the first, fourth and fifth tergite . The legs are mainly colored yellow.
There is a similar species of sawfly - Tenthredo thompsoni , which cannot be distinguished from Tenthredo marginella in pictures .
The larvae of Tenthredo marginella are dark blue-gray in color. On each body segment there is a large yellow spot on the side, which is framed by a smaller black spot below and above.
Occurrence
The distribution area of Tenthredo marginella extends from southern Europe through Central Europe, North Africa, the Caucasus to Central Asia. The species prefers wet meadows as a habitat.
Way of life
The sawfly flight time extends until the end of August. Then, in the months of September to November, the larvae can be observed on their forage plants. They feed on mint ( Mentha ), Dost ( Origanum ), plantain trees ( Plantago ) and sage ( Salvia ).
