The Tönsmann Carpet Museum is a private museum in the East Westphalian town of Espelkamp in the Minden-Lübbecke district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The company owner, Jürgen Tönsmann, holder of the high Moroccan order “Chevalier de Ouissam Alaouite ”, started his collection in the 1960s and is constantly adding to it. The exhibition has been open to the public since 1990 and in 2009 the museum was reopened after being redesigned in the presence of the Moroccan ambassador, a MEP and other guests from politics and business.

Exhibits

One focus of the exhibition is the up to 300 year old nomad and Berber carpets from Morocco. Special carpets are, for example, an approx. 120 year old Beni Ourain carpet, which was knotted with the wool of a breed of sheep that has long been extinct, or a Glaoua carpet, of which only one example is in the Textile Museum in Washington and one in the Tönsmann Carpet Museum.

In addition, rare minerals are shown, such as B. Erythrin , of which hardly any locations are known today, as well as exhibits of Islamic-North African art, such as a collection of centuries-old Korans and work tools of the nomads, such as hand mills, knotting frames, carpet scissors and much more. The oldest exhibits are between 12,000 and 20,000 years old.

In July 2010 the museum was expanded to include the Tibet / Nepal department in the presence of the Ambassador of Nepal. There you can see, for example, a 300 year old Tibetan prayer book and traditional musical instruments such as a historical dung-chen .

Heliochronometer

Heliochronometer

Since June 2012 the museum has had an advertising medium in the function of a sundial. This seven meter high heliochronometer, made of 1.8 t stainless steel, is designed on the coordinates 52 ° 23'41 north, 8 ° 37'41 east according to the rules of gnomonics and aligned parallel to the earth axis so that all edges point to the celestial pole. On the disc of the sundial, the history of astronomy is presented using many documentations and philosophies of life from different cultural areas. The stele was made with the help of the golden ratio to emphasize a special geometric harmony.

Memberships

The museum is a member of the Association of the “Museum Initiative Ostwestfalen” and the “Network of German Entrepreneurial Museums”. It is also a LandArt station, an initiative for cultural events in the Minden-Lübbecke district.
