Terentius Maximus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Terentius Maximus , also known as pseudo- Nero , was supposedly a Roman usurper during the reign of Emperor Titus around 79/80.

Life

Terentius is said to have been a doppelganger of Nero and, like Nero, appeared as a singer to accompany the lyric . He gathered a crowd of followers around him in Asia Minor , which grew considerably on his march towards the Euphrates . He was forced to flee to the Parthians , where he also passed himself off as Nero and demanded support from them in return for the surrender of Armenia . The Parthian regent Artabanos III. received him and promised him help in "returning" to the Roman throne. However, the usurper was executed at an undisclosed point in time when his true identity was discovered.

Terentius Maximus is possibly identical to another pseudo-Nero who appeared with the Parthians around 88/89 and is said to have been extradited to Domitian (after his exposure) .
